Facilities offered

The FGC exercises both an educational and social role, since some of the pupils come from very low income group families. Most of its pupils come from Port-Louis and its surrounding suburbs, namely Petite Rivière, Lower Plaines Wilhems, Pointe aux Sables, Albion, Tranquebar and Roche Bois. Transport facilities are offered to those living in Plaines Wilhems, Albion and Pointe aux Sables.

The FGC relies on the generosity of benefactors and sponsors to offer free meals to all pupils. Hence, on their arrival at school every morning, our pupils are entitled to a well-balanced diet breakfast. Lunch prepared in a modern and fully equipped kitchen is served at noon.

Pedagogy

The pedagogical programme is designed to suit the intellectual capability of the pupils in view of his/her insertion in society. Hence, courses are run on a rotational basis with a mix of academic and technical classes. Educational visits are also organised as extra-curricular activities to increase awareness, interest and interaction with the surrounding realities thus helping our pupils to overcome impediments in everyday life through time and spatial orientation. As far as pedagogy and training are concerned, FGC’s school offers the following facilities:

A craft workshop mainly for girls
A woodcraft workshop for boys
An Art & Craft Academy

Academic side

Three units for pupils aged between 4 to 16 years
One holistic class
Special Class

One unit for children with stronger difficulties, where they are trained to become autonomous.

Computer laboratory

A computer Laboratory is operational since 2017 . and is headed by a specialised Educator.The aim of this unit is to familiarise the pupils with the facilities offered by the use of Information Technology. They are trained in the basic elements of IT. The unit offers opportunities to all pupils to learn through the special software Sankore designed for slow learners.

Paramedical Section
  • One Occupational Therapist is responsible for the re-education, rehabilitation and physical adaptation of all pupils.
  • One Social Worker looks after the environmental behaviour of all pupils and their families
  • One part-time Psychologist looks into the social and behavioural attitudes of all pupils.
  • One full-time support Psychologist assists the part-time Psychologist in the day-to-day work.
  • One Speech Therapist works with pupils having speaking difficulties.

Sports Activities

Sports form part of the therapy provided to our pupils. A fully equipped gymnasium operating under the supervision and guidance of a sports officer is opened to all pupils every day.

Moreover, sports activities, such as football and racing, are organised on a regular basis thus revealing sporting talents among some pupils. The best performers represent FGC in local as well as international sports competition namely the Football Republic Cup (FGC ranked second), the National Handisport Football Championship, and the Special Olympics Well Summer Games in 2007 when FGC won 2 gold medals and 3 silver medals. FGC was also represented in the 2019 edition in Abu Dhabi. FGC is an active participant in the Special Olympics Games activities.

A Sports Day is organized at Maryse Justin Stadium every year during the month of September. This activity not only reveals sporting talents among our pupils but also creates a networking with their parents, the staff and Managing Committee members and our sponsors.

Integrated Education

Our integrated education programme aims at promoting the employability of our pupils. Some of them have been offered jobs in various fields such as maintenance, gardening, handling, cleaning etc. Pupils are also encouraged to become self-employed. For instance, one of our ex-pupils has created her own business in handicraft. The FGC keeps prospecting new avenues for the employment of its pupils.

Courses are run in the following fields:

  • Gardening: organic gardening is developed as a therapy whilst contributing at the same time to the production of vegetables for the school’s kitchen.
  • Music: whilst being taught as a hobby music also serves as a therapy. A percussion group, coached by a music teacher who graduated from Conservatoire Francois Mitterrand, has been set up. The Police Band Master is also coaching the pupils on a voluntary basis. A new programme has been devised to diversify the various types of music to be included in the music curriculum.
  • Cooking: pupils are trained in basic kitchen works
  • Woodcraft: a fully equipped woodwork workshop, operating under the supervision of qualified instructors, gives the opportunity to our male pupils to develop their skills and empower them to be job seekers in the furniture and related wood industry.
  • Handicraft: two classes one for binding and one based on the utilisation of recycled materials help our pupils to be creative for the production of small handicraft items.
  • Painting and innovative handicraft classes sponsored by the National Social Integration Foundation have been introduced by a sponsored NSIF trainer. Consequently new talents have been put in the limelight. Hence, several paintings produced by FGC pupils have been sold during a Golf Tournament organised by the Indigo Hotels Group.
  • FGC is thus following the path of ecological trend and originality whilst boosting at the same time its handicraft courses.
